Ha Long Bay boat accident drowns 12

12 persons drowned included 10 foreigners, one Vietnamese-Australian and the local Vietnamese tourguide, when they were sleeping aboard the boat which sank at around 4.45am. 9 tourist saved indcluding 2 Danes. The boat took on water so fast that sleeping passengers had almost no time to escape the torrent that filled their cabins. Nine tourists and five crew survived.
The ship belonging to Truong Hai Company, aboard were 26 people including one captain, four crew members, one tour guide, and 20 foreign tourists. Truong Hai Company was previously named Bien Mo Company, which owned a boat that overturned during heavy rain on the bay in Ha Long Bay in September, 2009, killing three foreigners - two from Britain and one from France - and a Vietnamese. The company changed its name four months ago.
Police investigation shows that a valve that allows water to enter and cool the engine had been left open while the ship was anchored for the night. The engine had been switched off which prevented the pump to bring water to function. When the captain and crew woke up and realized his mistake it was too late, according to police. The boat sank within minutes.
This is one of the worst accidents in Vietnamese history involving foreign tourists.
Almost 200,000 boat trips were taken on Halong Bay in the first 10 months of last year.
